About 550 students from Elgin Market, Huron Heights and St. Anthony’s in Kincardine, and Ripley-Huron Community School, gathered at Ecole Elgin Market, Wednesday morning, to join in the Team Unbreakable Run.

Following a warm-up routine, the group headed out on a three-kilometre walk down to the boardwalk, across to the Kincardine Lighthouse, under the Huron Terrace bridge and the Queen Street bridge, and back to the school for medals and refreshments.

The students also had the option of doing a five-kilometre run to the beach and then to Geddes Park, through the trails, and back to the school.

It’s all part of a physical fitness program that helps keep the body active and improves mental health.

Brianna Yuill of the Kincardine Family Team, said Team Unbreakable is for Grades 3-6 students and this event is the culmination of the eight-week program that encourages youth to understand and appreciate the connection between physical exercise and positive mental health, and to stay active.

“I love coming to Kincardine for this event,” said Tim McFadden of Team Unbreakable in Toronto. “It’s the highlight of the school year. You have four schools working together, with the focus on fitness and mental health. You have an amazing run and it keeps growing every year.”

The event is sponsored by Bruce Power, Sobeys, Godfather’s Pizza and No Frills.
