Huron Heights hosts vibrant, musical Multicultural Day
Students at Huron Heights Public School, Kincardine, were waving the flags of 14 countries, including Canada, at the school’s Multicultural Day, Thursday (May 15).

The event began with piper Nolan King of the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band playing as the students entered the gymnasium.

Nolan told the students that he took up the bagpipes in 2018, and two years later, joined the pipe band. Now, he plays competitively and last year he was named Supreme Champion for light music, Grade 5 youth, by the Pipers and Pipe Band Society of Ontario.

Once the students were assembled, they heard the Canadian national anthem sung in 11 different languages.

Elaine Slade of the Home and School Association thanked the Bluewater District School Board for the grant given to Huron Heights to celebrate diversity with this Multicultural Day at the school.

Each classroom created a display for one of the 14 countries which included:

  • Canada
  • Ukraine
  • China
  • Pakistan
  • The Netherlands
  • Jamaica
  • Kuwait
  • The United Kingdom
  • Australia
  • El Salvador
  • Japan
  • Peru
  • India
  • Greece

“Today, you get to travel to these 14 countries, learn about their cultures, and sample food from around the world,” said Slade. “Thank you to all the wonderful parents who have helped us with this special day.”

Chandra Tripathi told the students that the first Multicultural Celebration was held in 2003 at Huron Heights. The event just marked its 20th anniversary last week at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine, with more than 1,000 people attending.

The Huron Heights Multicultural Day continued with some Bollywood Dancing, and the Parade of the Flags of the 14 countries, before the students travelled to the various displays and to several other activities.
