Three loved ones honoured at Tiverton Lions tree dedication ceremony
Three loved ones were honoured with the dedication of three trees in the Tiverton Lions Walk of Memories, during a ceremony, Sunday afternoon, at the Whitney Crawford Community Centre in Tiverton.
Lion Rosemary Grover welcomed the crowd, and the event opened with the singing of “O Canada,” led by the trio of Deb Morris, and Charlie and Ashley Steinhoff.
Since 2005, the Tiverton Lions have filled the Walk of Memories with trees, said Grover, noting that a stand of three trees is planted in memory of all those remembered each year.
The plaques of names are posted along the walkway which features a waterfall, flower beds, and a gazebo. This year’s name plaques will be added to that walkway, bringing the total to 280 plaques in memory of 321 people.
Lion Gerda Roppel acknowledged the many volunteers who help with the Walk of Memories, and special music was provided by the trio.
Lions Ron Manto and Sue Nicolak unveiled the name plaques for this year.
Rev. Rick Warne of Knox Presbyterian Church in Tiverton, told the crowd that it’s important to get to know the names in your community.
“Every name has a memory and a story,” he said. “The Walk of Memories brings joy and sadness. You remember the stories of the people from the past, and you hold memories of them in your heart.
“For some, the memories are still fresh. Some loved ones lived a long time, while others had their lives cut short.
“As Christians, we know our lives on earth are brief and we believe in eternal life. But those who were with us, are missed.”
Certificates were then presented in memory of the following loved ones:
- Kathryn Gilchrist
- Grandma Barbie Apps
- Robert McCourt, Special Olympics Ontario coach
The event concluded with more special music by the trio, a closing prayer, and refreshments.
