​Library’s volunteer income tax program sees $1.3-million in benefits returned to residents

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, administered by the Bruce County Public Library, delivered outstanding results for Bruce County residents in 2025, marking its eighth successful year.

Expanding to five locations — Kincardine, Lucknow, Port Elgin, Walkerton, and Chesley — the program provided free tax preparation services to individuals and families with low to moderate incomes.

The initiative generated more than $1.3-million in combined refunds and benefits, putting money directly back into the pockets of county residents.

Throughout March and April, 15 dedicated volunteers contributed their time to the program’s clinics, making a significant impact in the community:
 

• Filing of 433 income tax returns
• $109,350 in tax refunds
• $1,199,575 in various benefits for clients
• An opportunity to educate clients about available benefits, including the GST credit, seniors grants and the Canada Child Benefit

"We are grateful to the volunteers who made this year's program such a success,” said library board chairman Mark Goetz. “Their generosity in donating their time and expertise has helped residents navigate tax season and supported the library in our commitment to being a trusted community connector."

The program exemplifies community collaboration and engagement, with the library partnering with the county’s human services department to ensure residents accessing county services could also access essential tax-filing support. These combined efforts made a meaningful difference in the financial well-being of many county families.
