Knox Kincardine presents more than $450 to food bank
The Kirkin’ of the Tartan, held July 6 at Knox Presbyterian Church in Kincardine, wasn’t just a service to bless the tartans, it also saw the loose offering of $464.75 presented to the Kincardine Food Bank.
Leslie Ray of the church was on hand Thursday morning, to make the presentation to co-ordinators Lorrie Alexander, Nan Grant and Jane Calcutt.
While demand for the food bank levels off a bit in the summer, there are still many people in need of the service, says Alexander.
The month of June saw more than 400 visits, assisting 157 children, 183 adults and 54 singles.
“We’re getting new people every single month,” says Alexander. “We had five in June, eight in May, eight in April, five in March, eight in February and seven in January. We have lots of seniors, and a diverse population with a different dietary culture and increased vegetarian requests.”
The food bank also provides personal hygiene items, baby diapers, wipes and formula, and if it has the resources, even laundry detergent.
Thankfully, the generous community continues to donate to the food bank, says Alexander, as do many local producers and stores, and there is a great group of volunteers that helps out every week.
The food bank is also providing information about programs and services in the area to assist people beyond the need for food, says Alexander.
“We can direct them to the Clothes Hamper or the Women’s House,” she says. “We can help people with immediate responses. They know about the 211 line, but they don’t have a cell phone.”
