CNSC president and staff meet with Kincardine, discuss duties of nuclear host community
Pierre Tremblay, president of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), and senior CNSC staff were in Kincardine, Thursday, meeting with members of Kincardine council and staff, including mayor Kenneth Craig, and councillors Bill Stewart and Rory Cavanagh.
This meeting underscored Kincardine's pivotal role as the host community of the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station, renowned as one of the world's largest operating nuclear facilities with plans on the horizon for future expansion with the Bruce “C” project.
During discussions, the group talked about the tremendous benefits and opportunities, as well as the challenges, intrinsic to being a nuclear host community. This collaborative dialogue is part of ongoing efforts to promote safety, security, and environmental stewardship at nuclear facilities, and recognizing the inherited role that a host community contributes to supporting these activities.
"There is a lot of excitement and interest in the nuclear sector at both the provincial and federal levels,” said Kincardine mayor Kenneth Craig, in a press release, issued Friday. “The Municipality of Kincardine welcomes the opportunity to build strong connections and partnerships with the CNSC, industry, and all levels of government, as well as supporting other communities in Canada that are exploring new nuclear."
The CNSC is Canada’s nuclear regulator and is dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of Canadians, safeguarding the environment, and upholding robust security measures. This meeting marks a significant step toward enhancing collaboration between the municipality and the CNSC while working to fortify relationships across various governance levels and aligning efforts with industry advancements.
