Huron Bruce Nature holds annual corn roast to kick off new season
The clouds on the horizon were dark and the wind off the lake brisk, but the rain held off just long enough, Saturday (Sept. 6), for 30 members of Huron Bruce Nature to enjoy their corn roast and potluck supper, the club’s traditional welcome to a new season.
The group gathered behind the beautiful lakefront home of hostess Patricia Leonard in Point Clark, out of the wind to enjoy hot dogs, corn and a wonderful selection of side dishes and desserts. The hot drinks were particularly appreciated this year.
The club begins its 41st season with a new name and logo and an impressive roster of guest speakers and topics, including fish ecology, the Greenock Swamp, butterflies, explorers, native plants and more.
Shoreline education was a focus in late August with a hands-on exploration of coastal geology with club member Bob Geddes; understanding dune health, coastal dynamics and how to protect the shoreline, with staff of the Lake Huron Coastal Centre; and a joint presentation by Maitland Valley and Saugeen Valley Conservation Authorities representatives, explaining to residents and club members how wind and water levels shape the coast and how these changes affect the local landscape.
The first meeting of the new schedule takes place Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m., at the Point Clark Community Centre. The topic is changing ecology of fish communities of Lake Huron.
The club meets eight times per year and organizes many hikes and tours of local trails, gardens and interesting nature-related attractions.
Membership is $25 annually and payment instructions can be found at
