Bruce Power, partners to conduct Huron Unity emergency preparedness exercise, Nov. 18-20
Bruce Power, in collaboration with provincial, federal, and municipal partners, will conduct Huron Unity, a large-scale emergency preparedness exercise from Nov. 18-20.
For six decades, Ontario’s nuclear sector has demonstrated an unparalleled safety track record, and emergency preparedness is a key part of the industry’s strong safety culture. This exercise is an important part of Ontario’s Provincial Nuclear Emergency Response Plan, designed to strengthen co-ordination and readiness in highly unlikely scenarios, and demonstrates Bruce Power’s commitment to safety and partnership with local communities.
Huron Unity will bring together external agencies, including Emergency Management Ontario, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), local municipalities, law enforcement, health-care providers, and first responders. The exercise on the Bruce Power site focuses on testing communication and collaboration across all levels of response to ensure plans work effectively.
“Safety is Bruce Power’s number one value,” said Jennifer Edey, senior vice-president of operational services and business development at Bruce Power. “These exercises allow us to work closely with community partners and external stakeholders to make sure we all know our roles as we continue to keep our people, our site, and our communities safe.”
The scenarios employed in Huron Unity are designed to challenge participants and validate emergency plans. Such events are extremely unlikely because of robust safety systems and plans, but these exercises provide valuable opportunities to strengthen resilience and ensure co-ordinated efforts with partners.
Bruce Power conducts major preparedness exercises approximately every three years, involving hundreds of participants across internal teams and external agencies, ensuring a collaborative, all-hazards approach.
