Bruce County Public Library celebrates Canadian stories through Forest of Reading program
The Bruce County Public Library has announced its participation in the Forest of Reading, Canada’s largest reading program. This national program celebrates Canadian authors and illustrators while inspiring a love of reading in children of all ages.

The library will offer six Forest of Reading award categories this year: Blue Spruce, Silver Birch Express, Silver Birch Fiction, Yellow Cedar, Red Maple, and White Pine. These will be available for children and teens, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. Each category highlights outstanding Canadian books chosen for different ages and reading levels, encouraging readers to explore stories that reflect diverse voices and communities.

Nominated this year in the Blue Spruce category is Bruce County’s own Elizabeth Davaze for her book, “The Weedflower.” It is a story for children, ages four to seven, but its themes of wonder, community and resilience are heartwarming for all ages.

“The Forest of Reading is a great opportunity for our patrons to connect with Canadian stories and discover new authors,” said program co-ordinator Nancy Kuhl. “We’re proud to support a program that celebrates creativity and the joy of reading.”

Forest of Reading runs annually in libraries across Canada. Teachers may register their classes by contacting the local library branch. Staff will provide all patrons with ballots that highlight the nominees for each category. Before marking their ballot and voting for their favourite by April 24, 2026, participants are encouraged to read at least five of the 10 nominated titles. The announcement of winners is part of the Forest of Reading Festival in Toronto in the spring of 2026.

To explore this year's nominees, visit the BCPL website to browse book lists, where you can also reserve copies on-line to pick up at your nearest branch.
