Walker House Museum to host session about Barnardo Home Children
The Walker House Museum in Kincardine is hosting a special presentation by local historian Bill Streeter, sharing the story of his grandfather, George Streeter, who came to Canada at just 10 years old as part of the Barnardo Home Children program.
From the 1890s to the 1930s, more than 33,000 Home Children were sent from the United Kingdom (U.K.) to Canada. While some had positive experiences, many were promised a better life but were instead placed in hard labour as farm hands or domestic workers, with some facing difficult conditions and abuse.
Discover how these children — including those who arrived in Bruce County — shaped local history and left a lasting impact on our communities.
The presentation is slated for Saturday, Jan. 17, from 1-2 p.m. Admission by donation.
