Submissions open Jan. 1 for community art exhibit at Walker House Museum, Kincardine
Artists are invited to submit their work, beginning Jan. 1, 2026, for "Still Becoming: A Community Art Exhibition on the Creative Power of Age," hosted by the Walker House Museum in Kincardine.

This exhibition explores aging as a process of growth, creativity, identity, and transformation — not as a conclusion, but as a deepening. Artists are invited to reflect on the ways they continue to discover, learn, evolve, and create meaning in later life.

The event is organized in partnership by Active Living 55-plus and the Walker House Museum.

Submissions are open from Jan. 1 to May 17, and the exhibition runs from June 5-30.

SUGGESTED ARTISTIC THEMES AND INTERPRETATIONS:

  • Transformation and Process - Works that reflect shifting identity, evolving roles, or transitions through time. Art that embraces process, layering, or visible revision — mirroring how life continues to unfold.
  • Memory and Reflection - Pieces inspired by memory, dreams, and revisiting the past — not as nostalgia, but as integration. This may include personal artifacts, letters, or photo collage to show life’s journey.
  • Bodies of Time - Portraits or paintings reflecting the aging body with honesty, dignity, and complexity. Artists may use texture, patina, or layered surfaces to convey lived experience.
  • Nature and Seasons - Metaphors drawn from nature — growth rings, erosion, flowering, decay, and renewal. Botanical or natural imagery may represent cycles of becoming.
  • Voice and Legacy - Art that expresses what hasn’t been said until now, or reflects on legacy — what we pass on creatively, emotionally, or spiritually.

ARTIST WORKSHOP

A guided artist workshop will be held at the Walker House Museum, Feb. 10, from 5-7 p.m.

This session is intended to support community members who wish to participate in the exhibition and would benefit from guidance in beginning or developing their artwork. To register, send an E-mail message to jbeer@clkd.ca or call (519) 396-9434.

ARTWORK CRITERIA

  • All art forms are welcome, provided they can be hung from a wire and installed on a wall.
  • All materials are accepted as long as the work is safe for public display and does not contain harmful or hateful imagery or messaging.

HOW TO SUBMIT

The submission period runs from Jan. 1 to May 17.

E-mail the following to thewalkerhousemuseum@gmail.com:

  • An image of the artwork
  • Material(s) used
  • Dimensions (Height × Length × Width)
  • A brief description, explaining how the work fits the exhibition theme

Artists may choose to sell their work during the exhibition, though this is not mandatory. The Walker House Museum will process sales on the artist’s behalf and will retain a 10-per-cent commission on sold works. Any sold artwork must remain on display until the exhibition concludes.
