Kincardine Theatre Guild has huge hit with brilliant comedy, "Taking Care of the Browns"
If you enjoy a good laugh, some wild and zany fun, and can wrap your head around the prospect of entertaining dead house guests, you are going to love the Kincardine Theatre Guild's production of "Taking Care of the Browns" which opened Thursday night at the Kincardine Arts Centre.

Billed as a romantic comedy, the show is much more than that, exploring how very attached we become to family, friends and the aforementioned deceased house guests. In fact, so attached that they become the two extras in the play.

Written by Canadian playwright Peter Paylor, the show tells the tale of Janet who has to sell her truck and move. She crosses paths with Danny and Susan who answered an ad to purchase her pick-up truck. In the process of that transaction, they end up also taking possession of the urns of Janet's deceased parents, Harvey and Irene Brown. Add to the mix, Bernie, the next door neighbour of Danny and Susan, and you have a perfect situation comedy of manic proportions.

While all four actors are superb, the stand-out is Matt Harvey as Danny, with his grandiose gestures and great lines. In the opening scene, he is carrying in the urns and asking his wife, played beautifully by Robin Rintoul, where to place them. She suggests the book case but it is covered with stuff, as is the coffee table, so she tells him to put them in the closet.

"But it's dark in there," he says, much to the laughter of the audience. And the show just gets funnier from there.

Joining them on stage, are Colin Catalan as the outrageously-funny Bernie, and Elaina Ravell as Janet, who add to the hilarity with their romantic antics.

The action flows through conversations with the Browns (in the urns), and at one point the police are called because Harvey and Irene have gone missing.

Eventually, as was expected, Janet shows up to retrieve her parents and panic ensues, and  then Christmas just isn't as festive without the Browns.

Will Danny and Susan end up relinquishing the Browns forever, will Bernie end up with Janet and the Browns, and will the references to all things Canadiana make you laugh or groan?

You'll have to get a ticket to find out.

"Taking Care of the Browns" continues tomorrow, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m., Feb. 14-15 at 2 p.m., Feb. 19-20 at 7 p.m., and Feb. 21-22 at 2 p.m.
