The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) watershed conditions statement - water safety, issued Monday for the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds, has been extended until Monday, Feb. 8.
On average, the watersheds have received 20 millimetres of rain since Sunday. Temperatures have risen to a high of almost 13 degrees Celsius C today (Wednesday, Feb. 3) before dropping back to zero overnight.
Much of the remaining snow pack will melt rapidly today. The ground is currently saturated and will not be able to absorb the runoff from snow melt and rain. Many rivers are currently bank full, with some rivers spilling into the flood plain. Headwater rivers are expected to continue to rise into Thursday with major rivers peaking on Friday. The water will
remain high throughout the weekend.
While significant flooding is not anticipated at this time, flooding of traditional low-lying areas is expected. Municipal staff should continue to monitor local problem areas and be prepared for closures of low-lying roads.
The MVCA reminds people that slippery and unstable streambanks and cold water temperatures will create very hazardous conditions around all watercourses. The Conservation Authority is monitoring watershed conditions and will provide an update if warranted. This message is in effect until 9 a.m., Monday, Feb. 8.
