MVCA ends watershed-wide flood watch but caution still advised in Huron-Kinloss

The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) has ended the watershed-wide flood watch and issued a Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety notice for all municipalities in the Maitland River and Nine Mile River watersheds.

River levels in both watersheds have peaked and are steadily dropping. With colder temperatures expected over the coming week, water levels should continue to recede.

Even though the overall flood risk is lower, MVCA notes that:
 

• Many watercourses remain higher than normal
• Floodwaters may still be present in floodplain areas,
• Debris jams and blockages may still occur at bridges and culverts
• Rural gravel roads may be soft or weakened from saturation and wash-outs

Higher water levels and fast-moving flows may continue into early next week.

This MVCA statement remains in effect until 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 17.

Huron-Kinloss Township is advising that water levels in Lucknow and the surrounding area continue to recede, and overall conditions across the township are improving. However, the ground, drainage systems, and waterways remain saturated. Even as flows decrease, there is still a risk of localized flooding, blockages, or sudden changes in water levels — especially near bridges, culverts, municipal drains, and low-lying areas.

Some local and Bruce County roads continue to experience flooding or wash-outs. These roads may remain closed while crews assess and repair damage.

Residents and motorists are asked to:
 

• Use caution
• Obey posted road closures
• Avoid driving through water on roadways

Standing water can hide damage beneath the surface, and the road may be unsafe even if it appears passable. Township crews will continue road assessments and infrastructure monitoring into the evening. Additional updates will be shared, as needed.

Dealing with flooding can be overwhelming. To help keep you and your home safe after a flood, follow these important steps:

Household Items
Throw away items that cannot be safely dried or cleaned. Materials that have absorbed floodwater may pose health risks.

Waste Disposal
The Huron Landfill is open Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., for disposal needs.

Sewage Back-up
If sewage is backing up into your home, contact public works at 519-395-3735 or after hours at 1-866-299-5199.

Structural Concerns
For concerns about structural damage, contact the building department at 519-395-3735.

Electrical and Appliance Safety
Do not use flooded appliances or electrical equipment until they have been inspected. They may pose a fire or shock risk.

Cleaning and Mould Prevention
If possible, start clean-up within 48 hours to help reduce mould growth and long-term damage.

The Township will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates, as needed. Updates will be posted on the township website and shared on the township Facebook page.
