A Bruce Power employee is in hospital after being injured during a routine maintenance activity as part of the Unit 8 outage at the Bruce Nuclear site in the Municipality of Kincardine.
John Peevers of Bruce Power communications, says that Monday, (Feb. 1), the employee was injured when some gas became ignited resulting in a burn to the worker. Bruce Power first responders transported the employee to an off-site hospital and the worker is being treated. This occurred on the non-nuclear side of the plant known as the Turbine Hall.
Bruce Power takes any safety event very seriously, says Peevers, and immediate actions have been taken to prevent reoccurrence with other workers carrying out similar work.
Any type of workplace injury that occurs on the site is viewed by Bruce Power as preventable. The company has notified both the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and the Ontario Ministry of Labour, and will continue to investigate the matter to obtain all the facts with a focus on prevention and continuous improvement based on this experience.
