Kim Shorts: Don’t miss out
Missed it by a day!

April Fools' Day, that is.

That’s okay because we have the rest of April to be out and about, and get re-acquainted with all the happenings and goings on in town and around the region.

You’d be a fool not to check out what events are coming up. I found that out in February and March when I started to venture out more after hibernating from all that gosh darn snow bombing earlier in the year.

My husband, Jim, and I attended the Kincardine Bruce County library branch musical event, Feb. 22, recognizing and supporting Black History Month. We heard some amazing African American spirituals, folk songs and poetry, and learned how these beautiful songs of faith, love, and hope came to pass during some of the darkest times in history - the chattel enslavement of Africans. Listening to Jenny Hunter, along with special guests Jason Hunter, Yuki Okumoto Stocovaz and Sarah Dunstan, was an emotional experience.

Another first for Jim and me, was attending the Kincardine Theatre Guild play. I just don’t think we were ready to go before. This was a new experience and boy, do we have some talented people in Kincardine. We saw “Taking Care of the Browns,” Feb. 14. We went with another couple and everyone had an enjoyable afternoon with lot of laughs. We were so smitten with the experience of the play that we plan to go back to see the next one that starts at the end of April.

Jim and I also got back into the rhythm of the Kincardine Legion’s Trivia Night. Our team did pretty well in February. Let’s just say, like the library, there’s a lot going on at the Legion.

But I have to say it is really nice to finally see the sun come out and some of that gorgeous blue sky peeking out from grey clouds. This warmer weather encroaching upon us means it is a lot easier to get out and go for walks.

You can check the events calendar on the Municipality of Kincardine website to see the list of activities, shows, programs and dances that are scheduled so far in April and May. It’s a big list, including the Kincardine Health and Wellness Fair, April 11, the Bruce County Blues Anniversary Celebration, April 19, and the Home Lifestyles show, April 25-26.

There are additional activities listed in the Kincardine Legion Branch on its Facebook page, everything from Bingo to Family Dinners, and bands playing. Did you know that you can join the Legion for free this year in honour of the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion?

You sure won’t get bored in Kincardine.

There’s also all of Bruce and Huron counties to explore. Jim took me on an adventure last month to find a coffee house in a church out in the middle of the region’s farmlands. (The snow by then was good and melted!) This is a man who does not use technology nor maps. It’s always an adventure with Jim driving! I was sure we would get lost but he found the place. We had a lovely exploratory outing. One of several since the snow left.
