Jeffreys’ late equalizer secures a draw for Huron United in season home opener

The Huron United Football Club kicked off its 2026 Tri-City Men's Soccer League season, May 19, at Spinrite Field in Listowel, splitting the points with Simba FC, by a score of 3-3.

As a result of accumulated disciplinary penalties from last season, Huron United’s match-day squad was short-handed, with three players serving suspensions. Manager Anirudha Panditrao emphasized the importance of pressing Simba early, as the visiting squad showed up with little time to warm up.

Attackers Adam Carty, Andrew Wiegersma, and Gerrit Satosek took the message to heart and menaced Simba's backline each time it was in possession, producing some early chances for Huron United.

Centre-attacking midfielder Ryan Schriek initiated a sequence in the 20th minute that gave Huron United possession inside Simba’s box. Winger James Jeffreys deftly lateraled the looping ball to Satosek near the penalty spot, and the Huron United co-captain confidently smashed the volley past Simba’s keeper for the opening goal of the season.

Simba’s offensive game plan heavily featured long balls, looking to take advantage of the slick conditions. In the 30th minute, a skipping ball set Simba’s striker in loose behind Huron United’s back-line, but the combination of full-back Ryan Carty's dogged pursuit and keeper Josh Coleman’s decisive close-out, thwarted the chance.

As the half-time whistle neared, Simba managed to capitalize on the last of a series of set piece opportunities, converting a rebound from close range in the 39th minute after Coleman parried the initial blast.

After the teams exchanged chances in the opening phase of the second half, Simba scored two goals in short succession, taking advantage of Huron United defensive lapses on lofted balls. Staring down a two-goal disadvantage with under 10 minutes left to play, the home team faced an early test of its resolve.

Huron United redoubled its attacking efforts in pursuit of a draw, with Panditrao implementing a formation change to push more players forward. In the 83rd minute, a passing sequence up the right flank culminated in Jeffreys flicking the ball through to striker Leiskau, who handled the ball around the keeper and slotted it into the yawning cage to cut the deficit to one goal.

The home team pressed frantically into added time. Wiegersma once again beat his defender with a sprint down the right side and launched a ball cross field to Jeffreys, who calmly controlled the bouncing ball and lifted it over the Simba keeper to even the score at 3-3 in the last play of the game.

Man of the Match honours went to Jeffreys for his three goals contributions, with honourable mentions going to Satosek, R. Carty, and Charlie Hall-Elwood, who capably deputized in holding midfield during the suspension crisis.

The club also recognizes Chris Coady’s valiant return from a year-long injury layoff, as well as the energetic performances of new and returning signings, Alex Friesen and Dylan Simon.

Huron United is playing out of the Tri-City Men's Soccer League again this season, and the next match was slated for Tuesday, May 26, against Suspects FC, at Spinrite Field, Listowel. Huron United’s roster is composed of players from Kincardine, Port Elgin, and surrounding areas, and the team is playing under the Saugeen Shores United Football Club.
