Huron United takes down reigning TMSL champions

The Huron United Football Club played its finest match of the young 2026 season, May 26, at Spinrite Field in Listowel, besting the reigning Tri-City Men's Soccer League champions, Red Academy, in a comprehensive 3-1 victory.

The title-holders showed their quality early, drawing first blood in the fifth minute with a perfectly-squared cross to the penalty spot after Huron United allowed a quick break up the right wing.

Huron United was undeterred by the early deficit and quickly imposed its style of play on the match, establishing purposive possession and methodically progressing the ball up-field. Winger James Jeffreys and attacking mid-fielder Aidan Terpstra threatened the Red Academy goal with skilfully-taken volleys, while Adam Carty showed great awareness with an attempt from half that sailed over the out-of-place keeper but drifted just wide.

Huron United keeper Josh Coleman stamped out several Red Academy attempts at leading passes early in the second half, confidently coming out to disposition loose balls at the top of his 18-yard box.

Huron United's persistent chance generation was rewarded in the 54th minute when centre-back Murray Martin willed the ball over the goal-line off a corner from Terpstra, taking an inadvertent fist to the face in the process.

Emboldened by the break-through, Huron United followed up with another goal in the 62nd minute. Co-captain Jacob Hunsburger won a battle in the defensive half and sent the ball up the right flank into the path of striker Gerrit Satosek who created space against his marker and drove a cross to winger Andrew Wiegersma at the far post. Wiegersma’s initial shot was stopped but he stayed on the parried ball and forced it over the line to give Huron United the lead.

Huron United continued to create offence even as Red Academy pressed for the equalizer. An insurance marker came in the 87th minute after Satosek drew a delayed foul while protecting the ball. Recognizing the referee was signalling that play was to continue on an advantage call, A. Carty leapt on the loose ball and exploited Red Academy's stagnant defence to streak in alone and expertly slide the ball under the diving keeper to increase the Huron United lead to 3-1.

Man of the Match honours went to Satosek for his relentless effort throughout, with honourable mentions going to stand-out defensive performances from Martin, Shadi Dahrouj, and James Tigert.

Huron United is playing out of the Tri-City Men's Soccer League again this season, and the next match is against Red Sea, Tuesday, June 9, at Spinrite Field, Listowel. Huron United’s roster is composed of players from Kincardine, Port Elgin, and surrounding areas, and the team is playing under the Saugeen Shores United Football Club.
