Nine loved ones were honoured with the dedication of a stand of trees in the Tiverton Lions Walk of Memories, during a ceremony, Sunday afternoon, June 21, at the Whitney Crawford Community Centre in Tiverton.

Lion Rosemary Grover welcomed the crowd, and the event opened with the singing of “O Canada,” led by Averee Hamann.

Since 2005, the Tiverton Lions have filled the Walk of Memories with trees, said Lion Dipisha Hamann, noting that a stand of three trees is planted in memory of all those remembered each year. To date, there are 300 trees in the park.

The plaques of names are posted along the walkway which features a waterfall, flower beds, and a gazebo. This year’s name plaques will be added to that walkway, bringing the total to 280 plaques in memory of 330 people.

Lion Gerda Roppel acknowledged the many volunteers who help with the Walk of Memories, and special music was provided by Averee, accompanied by her father, Duncan Hamann, on guitar.

Lions Ron Manto and Sue Nicolak unveiled the plaque which was still waiting for the new name plaques to be added.

Carolyn Keyes offered a meditation based on the poem, "Death is Nothing At All," by Henry Scott Holland.

She noted that death isn't the end. "While we are gone physically, the important part of us carries on. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are.

"Grieving is natural because we miss our loved ones. We have to move on with our lives but they will be with us always. Our physical body is but a short time here on Earth, but our consciousness or soul continues forever. And our loved ones continue to live in our memories of them."

Certificates were then presented in memory of the following loved ones:

  • Joan M. Pettigrew, 1953-2025

  • Jamie Swan, 1968-2025

  • Burton and Betty Eskrick

  • Patricia Anne Stewart

  • Keith Allan Brown

  • Josh Crewson, 1988-2020

  • Joanne Potter, 1943-2022

  • Rodger Bell Hunter

The event concluded with more special music by Averee and Duncan Hamann, a closing prayer, and refreshments.
