June brings mixed results for Huron United Football Club

The Huron United Football Club has experienced an inconsistent run of performances and weather so far in the summer portion of the Tri-City Men's Soccer League (TMSL) season.

Red Sea, a new club in TMSL, bested Huron United by a score of 4-2 in wet conditions in Listowel, June 9. Set pieces proved to be Huron United’s downfall in this match, with the hosts conceding a penalty kick as well as two goals from dead ball scenarios and an own goal to boot.

U21 call-up Aidan Terpstra produced a brilliant goal for the home squad and winger Drew Cobean scored the second off a header. Full-back Anderson Wolfe earned Man of the Match honours in defeat.

The Huron United Football Club arrived at the June 16 match against Rohingya FC B, eager to put the prior week's result behind it, and opened the game with strong play and high energy. The chance at redemption proved short-lived, however, with lightning bringing proceedings to a halt after 20 minutes. The match will be re-scheduled at a later date.

June 23, the Huron United Football Club returned to Spinrite Field to face rivals Riverside FC B, and the patience with last week's weather was rewarded as the conditions were perfect at game time.

Early sloppiness from Huron United, drew keeper Josh Coleman into some massive saves to help settle the game. Full-backs Alex Friesen and Wolfe were stand-outs on the back line in the first half, bombing up and down the flanks in attack and defence. Their penetrating rushes helped to generate very narrow misses from attackers Gerrit Satosek, James Jeffreys, Flynn Colwell-Castles, and Andrew Wiegersma.

In the 37th minute, Wiegersma gathered the ball near the halfway line and spotted his opposite winger Cobean accelerating through the centre. Wiegersma's lofted ball hit Cobean in stride, and Huron United's ball luck finally came around when the Riverside keeper's initial save bounced back off Cobean and trundled over the line. Riverside mounted a run of pressure late, but Huron United carried the 1-0 lead into half-time thanks to a little help from one of Coleman's posts.

The squads exchanged chances through the first part of the second half, with Coleman again standing strong in the Huron United net. Huron United’s best opportunities came on the feet of mid-fielders Adam Carty and Angus Sharpe, but the Riverside keeper denied both chances in the box.

The closing phase of the half again saw waves of Riverside pressure, and the visiting side pulled level with a deft header into the side netting in the 85th minute. A wild tackle on Cobean in the final seconds was controversially ruled to have occurred right on the 18-yard line, denying Huron United a penalty on the last play of the game. The squads settled for a hard fought 1-1 draw.

Man of the Match honours went to Colwell-Castles as the engine of Huron United's mid-field, with honourable mentions going to Coleman, Cobean, and Jason Leiskau for his stalwart performance deputizing at centre-back.

Huron United is playing out of the TMSL again this season, and the next match was set for Tuesday, June 30, against Stratford City at Spinrite Field, Listowel. The team's roster is composed of players from Kincardine, Port Elgin, and surrounding areas, playing under the Saugeen Shores United Football Club.
