Stewart Edgar Kaster, formerly of Kincardine, died peacefully in his sleep, June 18, 2026, at Brantford General Hospital, at the age of 99.
Born April 25, 1927, in Rosebank, Ontario, he was the son of Norman and Edith (Sherk) Kaster. Growing up on a farm in the country with four siblings, Stewart worked hard but enjoyed fishing year-round and excelled at sports, particularly softball; he was the last surviving member of New Dundee’s 1948 men’s All-Ontario finalists.
Although a keen and capable student, he left school after Grade 10 as young men were needed to work because many were called to fight in in the Second World War. With his brother, Wes, at his side, Stewart worked on the family farm and installed telephone lines throughout Wilmot Township. He had a true talent for understanding technology and people, and he spent the rest of his working life in the telecommunications industry, retiring in 1990 as the operations manager for Bruce Telecom.
On July 3, 1954, Stewart married the girl next door, Grace Miller, and together, they continued their life-long love story. Best friends and partners in a busy life that included three children, fishing, and travelling, they took pleasure in being good neighbours, loving parents and grandparents. Grace and Stewart were a support system for their many friends and extended families within the communities of New Dundee and Kincardine.
Stewart relocated his young family from New Dundee in 1967 to start a new job in Kincardine with the Bruce Municipal Telephone System (BMTS). Living on the shore of beautiful Lake Huron provided him with hours of fishing from the pier and onboard the boat of his friend, Marty.
An avid Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan, Stewart enjoyed watching the games (sometimes more than one at a time!) with family and friends. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend during his 99 years with us.
Stewart leaves behind an adoring family and many friends: his children, Dianne Heath (Jack), Tim Kaster (Kathie) and Jeff Kaster (Susanne); grandchildren, Amy Heath, Tyler Kaster (Kayla), Declan Kaster and Sean Kaster; and great-grandchildren, Eleanor, Henry, and Winston.
Visitation was held Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 10 a.m., at the Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre, Kitchener, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., with pastor Kenneth Craig officiating. A reception was held after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Brant Community Health Care System Foundation (bchsysfoundation.org) or the Lake Huron Fishing Club (lakehuronfishingclub.com), would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
