July 17 marks a very special day in Canadian history as the Royal Canadian Legion celebrates its 100th Anniversary. Although the Legion was established in 1925 following the Unity Conference of several veterans' organizations, it officially became incorporated by an Act of Parliament on July 17, 1926. Over the past century, the Legion has grown into Canada's largest veteran and community service organization, with more than 300,000 members in more than 1,300 branches across the country. For 100 years, the Legion has been dedicated to supporting veterans and their families, advocating on their behalf, promoting Remembrance, and serving communities from coast-to-coast. As we celebrate this incredible milestone, we remember all those who have built our organization over the past century and look forward to continuing that proud tradition for many years to come.
Here in Kincardine, Branch 183 has been proud to play its part in that century of service. While our foremost commitment has always been to Canada's veterans and ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten, our branch has also become an important part of the fabric of our community. Through volunteerism, donations, youth and sports programs, bursaries, community events, and support for local organizations and health care initiatives, Branch 183 continues to make a positive difference in the lives of so many. As we celebrate this historic anniversary, we thank all of the members, volunteers, and supporters, past and present, whose dedication has made our branch what it is today.
To celebrate this incredible milestone, Branch 183 has planned a special day of activities tomorrow (July 17). The day will begin with a Veterans' Barbecue from 12-2 p.m., a small way for us to show our appreciation to the veterans who have given so much in service to our country. At 2:20 p.m., we will gather at the corner of Lambton Street and Huron Terrace for the dedication of our new Remembrance Crosswalk, a lasting community tribute that will help ensure the sacrifices of Canada's veterans are remembered every day. The celebration will continue at the Legion with a public Open House from 3-7 p.m., featuring entertainment by "Eton Avenue," free hot dogs, building tours, and an opportunity for our community to celebrate 100 years of the Royal Canadian Legion
Congratulations to Deb Collins, who was the lucky winner of our latest Kin Cares 50/50 Early Bird Draw, July 10, taking home the $500 prize with Ticket No. 254592438! Deb purchased her tickets early in the month, giving her extra opportunities to win while supporting this great community initiative. There is still plenty of excitement ahead, with another Early Bird Draw happening on Friday, July 17, for $250, and the July jackpot continuing to grow. At the time of writing, the jackpot has already climbed past $17,500, so it’s looking very much like we will set a new record amount this month. But only with your help!
At the Saturday Meat Draw, we had just one double-dipper, and it was Doc Roppel who won two prizes. The 50/50 draw was won by Ainslie Martyn who took home $130.
We have decided to open the Legion this Sunday for a World Cup Final Watch Party. We will open at 1 p.m., and the game begins at 3 p.m. We will have the game on both big TVs and have beverages and snacks available. Come before the game starts so you can watch the pre-game show, which is actually called the Closing Ceremony (at 1:30 p.m.), featuring Post Malone and some Tom Cruise stunt antics. Also, perhaps grab your refreshments at strategic times, such as the hydration breaks so you don’t miss the half-time show with Justin Bieber, Shakira, Madonna, BTS, and some Muppet cameos! Oh, also there will be some awesome football (soccer?), so good luck to whoever you’re cheering for.
We are prepping the playlists and printing the cards for our next Music Bingo Night, Friday, July 24. We have listened to your feedback and are excited to announce that we will be offering Wings and Fries from the kitchen, from 6-8 p.m. So, bring your singing voice, your dauber, and your appetite and join us for a fun-filled night. Thanks to the volunteers who have agreed to help us offer this additional service. We are always looking to add new people to our list of volunteers, in any capacity you might be interested in. Just reach out to us, or speak to any executive member to let them know you would like to help.
Don’t forget that due to our big 100th Anniversary Celebration, there will be no Walkie Talkies or Jam Session tomorrow.
