West Region OPP report Civic Holiday traffic campaign results

(LONDON, ON) - Members of the West Region OPP issued 1,815 charges following 2,107 traffic stops across the region during the Civic Holiday long weekend traffic campaign.

The campaign, which ran from July 31 to Aug. 3, focused on the negative driving behaviours that contribute to traffic collision deaths, injuries and property damage on our roadways (speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt, distracted driving and impaired driving).

Police also enforced Ontario's Move Over law, which is designed to give emergency personnel the safe space they need to assist motorists and conduct other work on the roadside.

West Region campaign results are below:

• 856 speeding charges

• 178 seatbelt charges

• 14 distracted driving charges

• 45 impaired driving charges

• 11 Move Over charges

Detachment-specific figures can be found below:

"Fourteen people have died in speed-related collisions in West Region, so far this year," says acting traffic inspector Tara Bolstad, West Region OPP traffic safety and marine manager. "Speeding remains a leading contributor in crashes, fatalities and injuries across Ontario. Our officers will continue to educate drivers and make speed enforcement a priority in the communities we serve."
