A fourth-place finish in the Tri-City Men's Soccer League regular season earned the Huron United Football Club a quarter-final match-up against rivals Riverside FC B, Sept. 1. Against a backdrop of late summer fog, an unprecedented offensive blitz secured Huron United a 7-1 win and a spot in the semi-finals.
Riverside made the first advances of the game, earning a series of early corner kicks, each of which was met in turn by Huron United keeper Josh Coleman. As soon as Huron United settled into possession, it mounted the best stretch of offensive play of the season.
The frenzy started when winger Andrew Wiegersma won Huron United a corner in the fourth minute. Adam Carty's in-swinging delivery found Drew Cobean unmarked at the goal mouth, and Cobean contorted himself to meet the cross with an Ibrahimovic-like finish to take the early lead.
In the eighth minute, Cobean intercepted a Riverside throw-in and played co-captain Gerrit Satosek through to the corner. Satosek beat his man with a cut-back dribble before lofting a cross to the far post beyond the Riverside keeper's grasp. Wiegersma rushed on to the ball and scored with his first touch to double Huron United's advantage.
Barely one minute later, an ingenious flick from A. Carty inside his own half created space for Cobean out of nothing. Cobean carried the ball deep into Riverside's half before picking out a lateral pass to Satosek. Satosek smartly allowed the ball to roll across his body onto his right foot before slotting his shot into the bottom corner, giving Huron United a 3-0 lead inside of 10 minutes of play.
Riverside pulled one back in the 23rd minute with a cross-goal shot that picked out the bottom corner through a crowd. Huron United responded well to the setback, with winger James Jeffreys winning a corner on the half-hour mark. U21 call-up Aidan Terpstra delivered another inch-perfect cross to the far post, where it made a brief acquaintance with the iconic forehead of centre-back Dave McNeish on its way into the Riverside net.
The 4-1 lead forced a keeper change for Riverside, but Huron United did not afford the substitute netminder much time to settle into the game. A bouncing through-ball from centre-back Shadi Dahrouj gave A. Carty the opportunity for a trademark left-footed half volley, and the Huron United marksman thrashed his effort into the top of the Riverside net to cement a 5-1 lead in the 36th minute.
Manager Anirudha Panditrao emphasized the need for unbroken concentration in his half-time address, and Huron United conducted itself with composure in the second half despite the score-line inducing desperation in the visiting side.
A Dahrouj free kick in the 66th minute found Wiegersma near the top of the Riverside 18-yard box. Wiegersma brought the ball down with an excellent display of control, evaded a defender to breach the box, and forced two saves from the Riverside keeper before forcing his final rebound over the line to extend the lead to 6-1.
Centre-back Jason Leiskau set up Huron United's seventh and final goal of the evening with a long ball in the 86th minute that sent full-back Anderson Wolfe in alone on the Riverside net, and Wolfe's chipped finish eluded the keeper to put an exclamation point on the match.
Coleman and the rest of the Huron United back-line were resolute in the closing stages to deny Riverside even a consolation goal, and the six-goal advantage survived through the full-time whistle. The commanding 7-1 victory earns Huron United a place in the TMSL playoff semi-finals in Kitchener-Waterloo this week.
Wiegersma was selected as Man of the Match for his dominant performance on both sides of the ball. Honourable mentions went to Cobean, Terpstra, and McNeish for his landmark goal.
