The Kincardine Under-9 (U9) Cardinals rep. baseball team travelled to Chatham, Aug. 28-30, to play in the Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) championships.
Kincardine got off to a great start, beating the Welland Junior Jackfish, 12-2, Friday afternoon. The Cardinals played the Woodstock Wranglers Saturday morning and found themselves down, 5-0, after the first inning! Known as the "Comeback Kids," the Cardinals fought back, scoring 13 unanswered runs and beating the Wranglers, 13-5.
The Cardinals were fortunate to have a bye to the Saturday night game, featuring the two unbeaten teams, the Leamington Lakers and the Cardinals. The Cardinals, once again, found themselves down early this time, 7-3, after two innings. Somehow the "Comeback Kids" were able to shut the Lakers down the next five innings to tie the game, 7-7, in the top of the seventh inning.
The crowd for this game continued to grow as the match progressed with likely more than 150 people watching by the seventh inning. The game went to extra innings and the Cardinals scored a run in the eighth inning to go ahead, 8-7. Unfortunately, the Lakers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Cardinals. What a game!
Facing elimination in the double knock-out tournament, Kincardine played St. Thomas in the semi-finals Sunday morning, in a rainy overcast game. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they ran out of gas and lost, 16-3, to the eventual provincial champions.
It was a great weekend of baseball for the Cardinals to make it to the semi-finals at the (B) provincial championships. The team finished the season with a record of 31-7, including highlights of winning the Orangeville Citrus Cup and finishing second at the WOBA rep. year-end championships.
