The Kincardine Bulldogs of the Provincial Junior Hockey League, fell to the Wingham Ironmen, 7-2, in the season home opener, Saturday night, at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine.
Announcer Gord Kemp welcomed everyone to the first home game of the Kincardine "Canadian Tire" Bulldogs, and noted that the honourary Superheat flag-bearers were Cason and Oaklan Dwinnell, sons of alumni player, Tim Dwinnell.
Not only was it the start of the Bulldogs hockey season, the game was also an opportunity to announce a special cause, "Points for a Purpose," launched in honour of Tyson Downs, by Bulldog Bryce Martin. Tyson was just 18 when he tragically died from sudden cardiac arrest. He grew up playing hockey and lacrosse and was deeply loved by his family, friends and the community. He was also a close friend of Bryce.
In his memory, the TDBeAT Association and Bryce are working together to raise $15,000 to purchase and install an outdoor Save Station in Kincardine. This initiative is about more than raising money, it's about sharing Tyson's story, increasing awareness about sudden cardiac arrest, and helping ensure the community is prepared for these situations.
During the 2026-27 season, for every point that Bryce scores with the Bulldogs, he will donate $5 to the campaign, with the hope that others in the hockey community, local businesses and residents will join in and contribute what they can.
The ceremonial puck-drop was held in memory of Tyson and in support of a safer, stronger community. Ruby Wreford, who sang "O Canada," did the puck-drop.
During the game, Wingham opened the scoring early in the first period, before Kincardine tied it up on a goal by Leland Weber from Tyler Kelly and Austin Dunlop. Minutes later, Wingham went ahead again, but Connor Hagerty tied it at 2-2, assisted by Kelly and Weber.
Wingham dominated the rest of the game, scoring five unanswered goals to take the 7-2 win.
The Bulldogs are at home to the newest team in the league, the Clinton Radar, Saturday, Sept. 19, at 2:30 p.m., at the Davidson Centre.
