The Bruce County Public Library invites residents to celebrate Canadian Library Month throughout October and Ontario Public Library Week from Oct. 18-24.
This year's theme, "Loud for Libraries," highlights the impact public libraries make every day and challenges perceptions of libraries as quiet spaces. Throughout October, the public library celebrates the people, programs, services, and spaces that help communities across Bruce County learn, connect, belong, and thrive.
"Today's libraries aren't the libraries of the past," says library director Brooke McLean. "They are vibrant hubs of learning, creativity, discovery and connection. At the public library, people gather to explore new ideas, access free resources, participate in programs, and build meaningful community connections."
Throughout Ontario Public Library Week, the public library highlights the voices of community leaders and library champions on social media, recognizing the important role libraries play in building strong communities.
The celebration also includes a variety of special programs and events, including appearances by children's author Kevin Sylvester and author, journalist and broadcaster Ted Barris, along with activities and events taking place at library branches throughout October.
As part of the campaign, the public library also recognizes the dedicated staff who help bring library services to life every day.
"We're celebrating loudly for the Bruce County Public Library staff this month,” says library chairman Mark Goetz. “Every program, recommendation, community event, and welcoming library experience is made possible by the dedicated people who work behind the scenes and at the front-line every day. Through their knowledge, creativity, and commitment to service, the staff brings the library to life by connecting people with resources, opportunities, and each other."
The month's celebrations culminate with the event Loud for Libraries: A Celebration of Stories, Thursday, Oct. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Port Elgin Branch.
The Ontario Public Library Week event brings together representatives from the Ontario Library Association, the Federation of Ontario Public Libraries and the Bruce County Public Library to celebrate the role libraries play in communities across Ontario.
