Kincardine Community Concert Band refurbishes Doug Scott memorial bench

The Kincardine Community Concert Band has refurbished the 25-year-old Doug Scott memorial bench at Dunsmoor Park, Kincardine. Material was provided by the band’s newest sponsor, Jeff Hegmans of Heggy the Hedgeman.

Scott, who died in 2001, was not only a saxophone player with the concert band, but with such ensembles as the Kincardine Brass Band, the Lighthouse Swing Band and his own quartet, The Sunset Brass. His bench was donated for people to sit on and enjoy the music from the bandstand as the sun set behind it.

“I’m glad the town will move the bench back in front of the new stage,” says Patti Kell of Kincardine. “I’m looking forward to sitting there to watch the next Summer Concert Series.”

The Kincardine Community Concert Band, conducted by Mary Kloosterboer, is a non-profit musical group that welcomes brass, woodwind, and percussion players of all ages and experience. The band performs for the community during local Christmas parades, at local seniors' residences, at its annual Christmas concert, at the Massed Band event in Victoria Park, and for many years, during its "Music in the Park" summer concert series at Dunsmoor Park on Wednesday nights.

Rehearsals began at the end of September and are held Wednesday nights, beginning at 7 p.m., at Kincardine United Church, Princes Street, Kincardine.

According to the Municipality of Kincardine’s website, possible, future removal of the Dunsmoor Park bandstand and pavilion in 2027 is to “replace aging infrastructure, improve universal accessibility, and create a modern, functional waterfront gathering space for community events, such as Music in the Park and Sunday evening Sing-a-longs."

As the concert band begins its Christmas season, hopefully Scott’s bench will remain in memory of an incredible, local musician - to be enjoyed by the many summer concert guests.

The band was thrilled to welcome new members and returning members at the first practice, Sept. 30, and looks forward to the Christmas Concert, Nov. 29, at 3 p.m., at Kincardine United Church. Music will include fun, familiar selections.

Consider joining the band as a member, or as part of the audience!
