Restoration under way at Kincardine apartment building damaged by fire

Bruce County Housing is restricting public access to its apartment building at 915 Huron Terrace, Kincardine, which was damaged by fire Friday morning, while restoration work is under way.

That's the word from the agency in a press release, issued Monday.

Kincardine Fire and Emergency Services, Stations 11 and 12, responded to the fire, with mutual aid assistance from Ripley-Huron Fire and Emergency Services. The crews successfully brought the fire under control. The Saugeen Shores Port Elgin Station provided back-up services.

As a precaution, all tenants were safely removed from the building, and there were no reported injuries.

Staff from Bruce County and the Municipality of Kincardine worked in co-ordination with emergency responders, Victim Services Bruce Grey and the Canadian Red Cross to support the residents of the apartment building. All of them have now found, or have been supported in securing, safe temporary accommodation. These agencies continue to work directly with tenants and local social service providers to address immediate needs and next steps.

Emergency officials have completed their work at the site and released the building back to Bruce County which has assumed care and control of the apartment building following an investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office. Work has begun to restore the property for the safe return of the tenants. The extent of the repairs required, and restoration timelines are still being determined.

For those interested in supporting tenants displaced by the fire, financial donations are the preferred way to help at this time. They provide the greatest flexibility to respond to tenants’ changing and individual needs. Donations can be made through the Victim Services Bruce Grey Compassion in Action Fund.

Any resident affected by the fire, who requires assistance, is encouraged to contact the Canadian Red Cross at 1-800-850-5090 and follow the prompts for the Kincardine Fire.

The county and municipality extend thanks to the broader community for the generous support shown to tenants displaced by the fire. The assistance provided by residents, businesses, community organizations, local service providers, Victim Services Bruce Grey and the Canadian Red Cross has helped tenants access safe temporary accommodation and meet other immediate needs. Thanks, also, to Kincardine Fire and Emergency Services, Bruce County Paramedic Services, and the South Bruce OPP for their quick response.
