Kincardine Legion Corner

Kincardine Legion Corner

A huge thank you to everyone who turned up Thursday morning to help with our Poppy Campaign envelope stuffing. We had a great turn-out, the job was completed in great time, and that kind of community spirit is exactly what keeps our Legion strong. The campaign continues to roll, and we still need helpers to deliver poppy boxes to local businesses Friday, Oct. 23, followed by our street tagging day, Saturday, Oct. 24. If you have an hour or two to spare, please pop by the club room and add your name to the sign-up sheets on the bulletin board.

Our annual Ceremonies of Remembrance are just around the corner. We will gather in Tiverton at the Lions Memorial Park, Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m., while our Kincardine service takes place Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m. inside the Legion Hall, followed directly by the traditional outdoor wreath-laying at the Cenotaph. Local businesses, community groups, and families wishing to dedicate a Wreath of Remembrance at either service, can purchase one for $65. Each wreath is personally labelled and announced by our MC during the ceremony. To reserve yours and arrange an easy e-transfer, reach out to our poppy chairperson, Jackie Tomajko, at jackietomajko.183@gmail.com.

Branch 183 is also proud to give back to our neighbourhood families during Remembrance Week, Nov. 8-14. We will be fully sponsoring a community week at the Davidson Centre, covering the cost for three public skates, a public swim, and the entire week of after-school drop-in gym sessions.

If you are interested in becoming a member of our Legion Colour Party, you are invited to attend a practice, held at the Legion, Tuesdays at 6 p.m., and Wednesdays at 5 p.m., until Remembrance Day. You need to be a Legion member, and it does require a Legion uniform. If you have any questions, reach out to our Sergeant-at-Arms Kirk Rutledge.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our Duelling Pianos fund-raiser, Friday evening. It was a complete sell-out! The energy in the hall was electric, and by all accounts, "What a night!" If you missed it, you can watch a few videos of the awesome music Cody and Joel played all night. A heartfelt shout-out to our volunteers, organizers, and everyone who sang along and helped make it such an outstanding success for the branch while raising a great deal of money for the BUILDKD-plus Campaign. In terms of numbers, $850 was raised from the 50/50 draw, $2,020 from people paying to either ‘buy a song’ or ‘stop a song,’ and overall we raised an amazing $10,833. Wow!

Speaking of lucky streaks, the Kin Cares 50/50 continues to roll along. Congratulations to Catherine Frook who pocketed $500 as the winner of the Oct. 9 Early Bird draw with lucky ticket No. 981705578. The next Early Bird draw goes this Friday, Oct. 16, for a cool $250. The October jackpot has already passed $10,700 and is climbing fast. You can grab your tickets on-line at kincares5050.ca, at the Legion bar, or while enjoying a pint at Grey Matter Beer Company throughout the entire month of October.

Lightning struck twice at the Saturday Meat Draw: Carolyn Hamilton's tickets came up two times, and Charlie Samms doubled up as well. Completing the winners' list were Joanne Hervieux, Elmer Lamont, Lynn Dodman, and Doc Roppel. Congratulations to all! David Mackay took home the 50/50 prize of $100.

Branch 140 in Clinton is hosting this year’s Zone C-1 Veterans Lunch, Sunday, Oct. 25. Doors open at 11 a.m., with the ceremony at Noon, followed by lunch for $15. There is still time, so if you are a veteran and would like to attend, reach out to Dave Carson directly, so we can get our delegation registered.

Submissions are now open for Volume XIV of the Military Service Recognition Book. If you have a veteran in your family whose story and service you would like to preserve in print, contact the branch office for submission forms and guidelines. Volume 13 copies will be arriving at the branch shortly.

Renew your Branch 183 membership before the end of November to take advantage of the Early Bird rate of $55 ($10 off regular dues). For our veterans, the renewal rate is $50. Please note that to get the $50 veteran rate, you must renew directly in person at the bar or by E-transfer to the branch, as the provincial on-line portal automatically charges $55. Get your renewal done before the end of November and you'll be entered into our next draw, which is for two tickets to our New Year's Eve party featuring Adam Cousins. As an added bonus, members who have renewed and paid their 2027 dues can save $10 on their New Year’s Eve party ticket. Tickets will go on sale starting Nov. 12.
