Barb Fisher is ready to roll up her sleeves and tackle the long list of things that need to be done in the Municipality of Kincardine.

Voted the new mayor of Kincardine in the municipal election Monday night (Oct. 26), she said she is pleased with the outcome and thanked all those who worked so hard on her campaign.

She looks forward to working with the new council, beginning with the inaugural meeting, Monday, Nov. 16.

Joining her at the council table will be deputy mayor Rory Cavanagh, councillors-at-large Mike McKechnie, Ali Shah and Mike Hinchberger, Ward 1 councillors Russ Crook and Jennifer Prenger, Ward 2 councillor Kyle McKay, and Ward 3 councillor Amanda Steinhoff Gray.

"This is a good time to be part of Kincardine council," said Fisher, who received 42.7 per cent of the vote, ahead of incumbent Kenneth Craig who had 37.4 per cent of the vote, and Ward 2 councillor Bill Stewart who had 20 per cent of the vote.

"There's a lot going on, and a long slate of things to do," said Fisher. "I'm committed to the work; this is what I signed up for."

She wants to bring full disclosure and transparency back to council, develop sub-committees to deal with issues, and encourage delegations to come and address council.

Among her priorities are affordable housing and responsible growth; the proper location for the new high school in Kincardine; and seniors and health-care supports.

Craig said that while Monday night's result wasn't what he had hoped for, he was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have served as mayor of the municipality that he has called home his entire life.

"Congratulations to Barb Fisher on her victory," he said. "I wish her and the incoming council every success. I also thank all the candidates who put their names forward. Our communities are stronger because of people who are willing to step up and serve.

"I thank all our current members of council and all of Kincardine’s dedicated municipal employees. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together over the past four years. From rebuilding Queen Street and investing in recreation facilities to improving road safety, updating our zoning bylaws and strengthening partnerships that will help shape our future, we’ve laid important groundwork for the years ahead.

"And to my family, friends, volunteers and everyone who placed their trust in me, thank you.

"Kincardine is a special place, filled with good people who care deeply about its future. While my time as mayor is coming to an end, my commitment to the municipality certainly is not."

Stewart said he believes the people voted for change. "Now, they are going to have to live with it."

McKechnie (right), who topped the polls for councillor-at-large, with 33.2 per cent of the vote, said he is very excited to be elected to council. "I'm looking forward to the next four years."

Shah received 23.9 per cent of the vote, while Hinchberger received 21.7 per cent of the vote.

McKay won Ward 2 with 60.4 per cent of the vote.
