SVCA extends flood watch to Saturday

The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) is extending its flood watch condition to Saturday, April 2, at 11 a.m.

Although river and stream levels have been declining since Tuesday (March 29), the forecast is for significant rainfall Wednesday night and Thursday. The forecast from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Surface Water Monitoring Centre, is for rainfall in the amount of 25-40 millimetres (mm), including isolated thunderstorms.

Additional widespread rain is predicted to follow this initial amount. With watercourses still flowing at elevated levels due to the precipitation Monday (March 28), the rain will produce additional runoff in the system and cause water levels to rise again.

If the predicted rainfall amounts do occur, then flooding is probable in the traditional low-lying floodplain areas. Municipal staff should continue to monitor typical problem areas and roads.

Continuing high-water levels are a safety risk and so the public is again advised to stay away from all watercourses.

The SVCA will continue to closely monitor river flow and weather conditions. This message is in effect until Saturday, April 2, at 11 a.m. unless a further message is issued.
