While local smoke-free initiatives first rolled out in Grey Bruce in 2002, the Smoke-Free Ontario Strategy was launched province-wide in 2006 to reduce tobacco use and protect everyone from the harmful effects of tobacco. The strategy supports more people to quit smoking, helps prevent young people from starting to smoke, and protects everyone from second-hand smoke.
“We have seen significant changes thanks, in large part, to the work of local champions,” says medical officer of health Dr. Hazel Lynn. “From bans on smoking in workplaces, in cars with children, to hospital grounds, and sports fields; changes like these only happen when local champions push to make our communities healthier.”
The health unit will present the Grey Bruce Smoke-Free Champion Awards May 31, World No Tobacco Day, to recognize local individuals, groups, associations, schools, municipalities and organizations that have made significant contributions to smoking cessation, prevention and protection in Grey Bruce.
Make your nominations by 4:30 p.m., May 2, through the health unit website www.publichealthgreybruce.on.ca or by calling 519-376-9420 or 1-800-263-3456, Ext. 1212. For further information or eligibility requirements, contact the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
