As part of a special project to celebrate the 119th anniversary of Women's Institute in February, 2016, member branches across Ontario were challenged to purchase teddy bears, make small quilts, wrap these items in individual protective packages and deliver these packages to hospitals, police departments or somewhere useful within our community.
Thursday morning, April 21, Sylvia Hasbury and Mildred Griffith of the Bervie Women's Institute presented three quilt-bear packages to the Bruce County paramedics in Kincardine.
Paramedic Chris Keyser pulled a dark brown teddy bear out of one of the packages and announced he had found a chocolate bear! Passing it around the group, he urged us to "smell the chocolate bear." Within moments, reasonable functioning adults were giggling like happy children.
It appears the paramedics will make good use of these quilt-bear packages to help children who find themselves in crisis situations.
The Bervie W.I., along with other Ontario branches, was presented with two copies of the children's book "Quincy and His Quilt: A Northern Adventure," written by a former member of Reid's Corners W.I., Loreen Ambler, to put in with each quilt-bear package. Two of these packages were presented to the Kincardine Fire Department earlier this year.
