Don Manary named Kincardine's Senior of the Year
Don Manary of Tiverton has been named the Municipality of Kincardine's Senior of the Year.
The presentation was made by
Kincardine mayor Anne Eadie (above left, with Manary), at the council meeting last night (July 6).
Manary and his wife, Wilma, have been married 51 years, said Eadie, in announcing the award.
He is a retired long-time employee of Ontario Hydro and now is greatly involved in community work. He takes care of the community garden at the Tiverton Walk of Memories and is a canvasser for the Canadian Cancer Society.
A leader of Cubs and Scouts for many years, he took a group of 20 Scouts to a Jamboree in 1981.
He has been a Mason for 50 years and was instrumental in having a mural painted on the side of the Masonic Hall in Tiverton.
Manary is known as Mr. Fix-it in the Village of Tiverton, and helped fix the electrical problems in the Whitney Crawford Community Centre in Tiverton.
A member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Tiverton, for 45 years, he has served on the board of managers, two terms as chairman, and is a Sunday School teacher.
Eadie said Manary is a deserving candidate for this award, and presented him with the certificate of acknowledgement.
"Of all the people I know who deserve recognition, Don is the most deserving of this award," said councillor Randy Roppel.
"I'm very humbled to receive this award," said Manary. "I didn't even know I was being honoured. But Wilma told me Randy had called and I was to come to the Kincardine council meeting tonight. Well I wondered, what trouble was he into now?!
"It's very satisfying doing the work I do. I just live life and do things for others, and if we all did that, we could help a lot of people. I don't do it to receive recognition, it's an honour and a pleasure to help out others."
