Huron-Bruce MP urges groups to apply for New Horizons for Seniors Program

Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb is urging local organizations to apply for the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP). Proposals for projects should be led or inspired by seniors and have a focus of keeping Canadian seniors active, engaged and informed. Applications will be accepted until July 29, 2016.

"Seniors have greatly contributed to our society and economy," says Lobb. "By supporting New Horizons for Seniors Program projects, we are acting to ensure that seniors maintain a good quality of life and continue to be active members of their communities."

The 2016-17 NHSP Call for Proposals for Pan-Canadian Projects invites groups to apply for funding for projects that will help to reduce social isolation among seniors by using collaborative approaches that place an emphasis on measurable results.

The annual NHSP Call for Proposals for Community-Based Projects is inviting organizations to apply for funding of up to $25,000 for projects that help empower seniors to share their knowledge, skills and experiences with others, and support communities by increasing their capacity to address local issues.

Those who can apply for funding include not-for-profit organizations and committees, municipal governments, research organizations, public health and social services institutions.

In 2006, over 30 per cent of Canada’s seniors were at risk of social isolation.
The National Seniors Council (NSC), in its Report on the Social Isolation of Seniors, 2013–2014, highlighted the importance of working with a wide array of organizations that deliver services and programs in an efficient and effective manner to alleviate isolation among older Canadians.
