DRAMATIC CRASH SHUTS DOWN BAYFIELD ROAD IN GODERICH
(GODERICH, ON) - Thursday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m., Huron County OPP officers had just cleared the scene of a single-motor vehicle collision that took place Wednesday night in Goderich, and re-opened Bayfield Road.
Just before 11:30 p.m. Sept. 7, Huron OPP, Huron County Paramedic Services and Goderich Fire Department members responded to the crash scene located on Bayfield Road between Bennett Street East and Blake Street East.
Upon arrival, emergency personnel located a completely destroyed Chrysler Sebring and two injured men. The driver managed to free himself from the wreck but his passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle.
The Sebring was travelling northbound on Bayfield Road when the driver lost control and the vehicle struck a hydro pole located on the east side of the road. The out-of-control car then continued northbound off the roadway, struck the raised portion of a driveway and was airborne. It came to rest landing on its roof on the front lawn of a Bayfield Road residence

The 22-year-old driver, Jesse THURLOW-WHITE of Central Huron, remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
His passenger, 24-year-old Gentry BOYCE of Goderich, also remains in hospital. His injuries are considered serious but non-life-threatening.
OPP West Region Technical Traffic Collision Investigators, along with OPP Forensic Identification Services, attended the crash scene to help with the collision investigation.
The crash remains under investigation; however, excessive speed and alcohol are believed to be factors.

OPP REPORT DEADLIEST LABOUR DAY WEEKEND IN 20 YEARS
(HURON COUNTY, ON) – While the data is preliminary, the OPP is reporting 12 road fatalities, one marine fatality and one off-road vehicle death over the long weekend, marking the deadliest Labour Day Long Weekend in OPP-patrolled jurisdictions in 20 years.
Tragically, one of the fatal incidents involved a single-vehicle crash in northwestern Ontario that took the lives of four of the vehicle occupants.
The OPP also conducted a robust Distracted-Driving Campaign over the long weekend. Ahead of the campaign, the OPP issued a province-wide News Release and maintained a steady flow of messaging on its provincial and regional social media platforms, calling on all road users, particularly passengers, to become part of the solution in reducing the significant number of distracted-driving-related road deaths that occur every year.
In spite of these efforts, the OPP laid close to 800 distracted/inattentive-driving charges against drivers who jeopardized the safety of innocent men, women and children who took to the roads to enjoy the last summer long weekend before the start of a new school year.
Huron County drivers heeded the message on the dangers of Distracted Driving; however, the message to Slow Down didn’t register with numerous drivers. A look at the charges laid over the long-weekend by Huron OPP:

While the OPP conducts focused enforcement campaigns every year, officers enforce distracted-driving and other traffic laws 365 days a year. This latest campaign brings the total number of distracted driving charges laid, to date this year, to more than 8,800.
