Verna Munro celebrates 103rd birthday; and more Tiverton news

Tiverton Park Manor held a special birthday party, Friday afternoon, for Verna Munro who turns 103, Sept. 12.

Kincardine mayor Anne Eadie came to visit as she has in past years, to help celebrate with Verna. After cake and tea, the mayor entertained residents with some piano music. Another surprise guest was Gremlin, a miniature horse owned by Wayne and Terri Schell.

Verna (nee Shipley) grew up in Tiverton with horses, and her face lit up when she saw her friend, Gremlin. Terri is an employee of Tiverton Park Manor and has brought her miniature horses to the manor before for the residents to meet.

Verna is an avid euchre player and a joy to chat with. We look forward to celebrating her 104th birthday next year. Best wishes, Verna!

Eva MacPherson, also of the manor, is celebrating her 90th birthday, Sept. 12.

Bruce County Plowing Match

What a great weekend for the plowing match. This event gives everyone a glimpse into what farming is all about and what hard work goes into bringing food to our tables.

The event also functioned as the fund-raising kick-off for Tiverton's Tom Evans, who recently won the Canadian Plowing Championship for reversible plowing, and will be going to Kenya in December, 2017, to compete at the World Plowing Championship.

John Gillespie, secretary treasurer of the Bruce County Plowmen's Association, estimates it will cost about $30,000 to send Evans and his plowing equipment there, so it will be a regional effort.

Krista Young of Elmwood is the new Bruce County Queen of the Furrow, winning the title Friday afternoon, at the Bruce County Plowing Match. She will represent Bruce County at the 2017 International Plowing Match in Walton. First runner-up was Laura Fullerton of Paisley; also competing, were Hillary Kempers of Paisley and Dakota Collins of Ripley.  For all the results you can visit www.brucecountyplowmen.ca or call 519-395-5248.

Tiverton Library

Join us for our 2 p.m. matinee movie, Thursday, Sept. 15. We’ll be showing "The Big Short," starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling. It’s about the housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000s.

Let’s all wish a speedy recovery to Herb Henkenhof and my husband, Steve, after their hospital stays in London. What are the odds of sharing a room in the London hospital with a fellow Tivertonite?

Belated birthday wishes to Samantha York, Laurie Moffat, Cora Lee Dobson, Chrystal Campbell, Verna McConnell and Steve Ballok. Birthday wishes this week to Sharon Hunter and Karen Ribey.

Anyone wishing to submit happenings or birthday/anniversary wishes from Tiverton, Underwood, Inverhuron and surrounding areas, please E-mail me at tivertonnews@gmail.com
