Kincardine Montgomery Ford Midget girls compete at Silver Stick tournament

February 9, 2015

The Kincardine Montgomery Ford Midget girls competed at the annual Saugeen Shores Silver Stick tournament on the weekend, which included players from Atom to Intermediate divisions, playing at arenas in Paisley, Tiverton, Port Elgin and Southampton.

The Ford girls began the tournament Friday night against the TCDMHA Chatsworth Rebels in Tiverton. The entire team was able to play this weekend which was good. The girls were fired up and ready to go after the pre-game warm-up, but despite out-shooting the Rebels, 4-1, the girls could not solve the Rebels goalie.
The team lost, 2-1, giving up a powerplay goal in the second period for the loss.

The tournament was set into divisions, and four teams per group, giving each team three games. So, the Ford girls' next two games on Saturday had to be wins.
Saturday morning in Southampton, the Kinucks played the Ilderton Jets - likely their toughest game! Prior to the game, the team was delighted to be greeted by the new owner of Montgomery Ford (the team sponsor), Craig Beck, and his wife, Christi.
Craig gave the team a brief motivational speech and wished the girls good luck. They needed both in this game as the girls fought a battle on the ice for 35 minutes of play. Both teams were very even and have played each other in prior tournaments, providing the fans with exciting, clean hockey games.

After the first period, the game was still scoreless, and in the second, Ilderton took two-goal. The pressure was on as the Ford girls needed a tie, but would prefer a win.
They got things going with a powerplay goal to start and, with five minutes remaining, the Kinucks scored the tying goal! The girls pushed for the win but the score remained tied.

Saturday night in Tiverton, the Kinucks faced the Milverton Royals who played in the "B" division all season and went through the OWHA to be re-categorized to a "C" team. No doubt the girls had their work cut out for them. They came out on fire and played a wicked game to win, 4-1.

However, the win, tie and loss were not enough to advance from the pool. Ilderton and TCDMHA went on to the finals with Ilderton winning this season's Midget "C" Silver Stick. The Ford girls will likely meet this Ilderton team again in the all-Ontario provincials in April, providing both teams make it through the playdowns games.

Scoring goals this weekend were: Danielle McBride - 1, Eden McFarlane - 1, Jorie Elliott - 1, Georgia Fields - 1, Hailey Woods - 1, Megan Stewart-Kemp - 2.
