Funeral Tuesday for former Huron-Kinloss mayor Stuart Reavie

A funeral will be held Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Lucknow United Church for Stuart Reavie of Lucknow, former councillor and reeve of the Village of Lucknow, the first mayor of Huron-Kinloss Township, and warden of Bruce County for three terms.

Reavie began his political career in the fall of 1990 when he filled a vacancy left on Lucknow council, after councillor Ab Murray took over as reeve from Herb Clark.

When Murray later stepped down as reeve, Reavie took on that job and held it until the amalgamation of Lucknow with Huron and Kinloss Townships in 1999. That year, he was elected the first mayor of the new Township of Huron-Kinloss, and in 2000, the entire council was acclaimed, giving Reavie his second term as mayor.

During his 13 years in municipal politics, Reavie was involved with such historic decisions as amalgamation, the creation of Westario Power, and the completion of the Official Plan that gave direction for the township's future. He also served as warden of Bruce County in 1996, 2000 and 2001.

He retired in 2003 to spend more time with his family and concentrate on his business, Reavie Farm Equipment in Lucknow.

His advice to the next township mayor was simple: “Be honest, listen, try to be as fair as possible. You have to make decisions even if they aren't the most popular. We live in a good township, thanks to the many volunteer groups and service clubs that work hard to make a difference in the municipality.”

Reavie, beloved husband of Deanna Reavie, of Lucknow, died at the Wingham and District Hospital, Friday, Oct. 21, 2016, at the age of 73.

Born in Toronto, Dec. 7, 1942, he was the son of Erland (Howe) and Elymer Reavie.

Father of Brian Reavie (Karen Anderson) of Calgary; and Peter (Jackie) Reavie of Australia. Also greatly missed by grandchildren, Hamish, Alina and Lucas; and half-sister Bessie Stanley of London.

Predeceased by his sister, Marion Duthie.

Visitation will be held at the MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home, Lucknow, Monday, Oct. 24, 2016, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

The funeral will be held at the Lucknow United Church, Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lucknow United Church or Wingham Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
