New cardboard recycling depot available in Town of Kincardine

The Municipality of Kincardine has a new cardboard recycling depot, located just off Bruce Avenue across from Park Street, in the Town of Kincardine.

Only flattened cardboard is accepted in these containers which sit at the south end of the soccer field parking lot, west of the lagoons.

In the spring, the bins were removed from a private location at The Beef Way because they were being misused. They were relocated to the Kincardine Waste Management Centre, with five more bins still available beside the Tiverton Library, and two bins beside the Underwood Community Centre (these are moved to the waste management centre during the winter months).

Last month, Kincardine council agreed with a report from public works director Adam Weishar, to set up a cardboard recycling depot at the location near the sewage lagoons.

Other locations under consideration were the municipal administration centre, the Davidson Centre, the Ward 1 works yard, and Connaught Park.

Weishar recommended the site off Bruce Avenue as the preferred option. He also noted that if misuse of the bins occurs again at this site or at the ones in Tiverton or Underwood, the respective depots would be abandoned immediately and collection would solely be accepted at the waste management centre.

He also noted that if council preferred to abandon the bins altogether, residential cardboard collection is still available through Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling. The cost to pick up residential cardboard in the Town of Kincardine, once per month (Fridays), would be $8,903.

"Unless offered across the entire municipality, monthly pick-ups are not preferred and are deemed problematic due to potential debris, etc.," said Weishar, in his report. "With collection only once per month, as opposed to bin availability year-round, the program is even more cost-prohibitive than other options."
