Sunny, warm day for Kincardine Legion Remembrance Day service in Tiverton

It was unseasonably warm and sunny, Sunday afternoon, for the Kincardine Legion's Remembrance Day service at the Tiverton cenotaph.

More than 100 people watched as the Colour Party marched to its position in front of the cenotaph. The flags were carried by Mike Dupuis, John Farrell, Adrian Green, Robert Fletcher and Flight Sergeant Alex Pierce of the Kincardine Air Cadets, under the direction of Sergeant-at-Arms Kirk Rutledge.

Pierce was carrying the flag of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ferris branch, Tiverton. This branch surrendered its charter in 1967, and the last surviving member, Wes Giesz, died this past year.

MC Robert Grey welcomed everyone. The crowd sang “O Canada,” followed by “The Last Post” played by Ray Kester, two minutes of silence, “The Lament” played by Jennifer Farrell of the Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band, and then “Reveille” played by Kester.

Numerous wreaths were placed by groups, organizations, individuals and businesses, including one for our Fallen Comrades, the Kincardine Legion, Dominion of Canada, Province of Ontario, County of Bruce, Municipality of Kincardine, the South Bruce OPP and Kincardine Police Services Board, and Kincardine Air Cadets Typhoon Squadron 183.

The service ended with “God Save the Queen.”

The Air Cadets guarded the cenotaph and provided assistance throughout the service.

The Kincardine Remembrance Day service will be held Friday, beginning at 10 a.m., in the Legion Hall, with placing of wreaths at 10:45 a.m., the remembrance portion at 11 a.m., followed by more placing of wreaths.
