Huron County OPP warn of dangerous white-out conditions

(HURON COUNTY, ON) – The Huron County OPP is urging motorists to stay off roadways and avoid unnecessary travel at this time (Saturday night, Feb. 14).
Several areas in Huron County are experiencing blizzard-like conditions. Limited to nil visibility from blowing snow is making travel extremely treacherous.

Huron OPP officers  responded to several collisions Saturday afternoon. At approximately 3 p.m., officers were called to a collision involving seven vehicles on Bluewater Veterans Highway at MTO Road. None of the occupants was injured in this multi-vehicle collision.

Also, just after 1:30 p.m., the Huron OPP, along with Huron County EMS, responded to a serious two-vehicle collision on Lucknow Line south of Glen’s Hill Road. A tractor trailer travelling northbound on Lucknow Line collided with a southbound Pontiac Sunfire.

The tractor trailer is blocking the roadway.

A 21-year-old male passenger in the Sunfire has been transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Sunfire sustained minor injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured.

OPP West Region Technical Traffic Collision Investigators will be attending the scene to investigate.

As of 5:20 p.m., the Huron County OPP has closed the following roadways:

  • Zurich-Hensall Road (County Road 84) from Bluewater Veterans Highway to Hensall
  • Dashwood Road (County Road 83) from Bluewater Veterans Highway to Exeter
  • Bluewater Veterans Highway (Highway 21) from Bayfield to Amberley
  • Blyth Road (County Road 25) from Bluewater Veterans Highway to Blyth
  • London Road (Highway 4) from Clinton to Exeter
  • London Road (County Road 4) from Clinton to Huron-Bruce Road
  • Lucknow Line (County Road 1) from Carlow to Lucknow

The Huron County OPP urges motorists to remain safe and avoid travel until the conditions improve and the roadways re-open. Driving on a closed roadway can result in a $110 fine and three demerit points upon conviction.

All motorists are encouraged to check weather and road travel conditions by calling 5-1-1 or by checking on-line at www.Ontario.ca/trip for up-to-date road conditions for provincially-maintained highways. This bilingual service is available 24 hours per day and provides updates on highway closures and road conditions.

Do Not call the OPP Provincial Communications Centre for road and weather conditions. Police will not provide this information. By calling the centre, you tie up phone lines and personnel used for emergency calls.
