Twolan makes history with third one-year term as Bruce County warden

Huron-Kinloss mayor Mitch Twolan has made history as the first mayor in 134 years to hold the post of Bruce County warden for three consecutive one-year terms.

Twolan was acclaimed to the position Thursday (Dec. 1).

When he announced in July that he was running for a third term as warden, Twolan said he had unfinished business he wanted to see completed.

"I want to see the natural gas project through," he said, "and Ontario Power Generation (OPG)'s Deep Geologic Repository for low- and intermediate-level nuclear waste in Kincardine. Plus, 2017 is Bruce County's 150th anniversary so it will be an exciting year of events."

The last time a Bruce County warden held the position for three consecutive terms, was 134 years ago, when Kinloss reeve Robert Purves won for a third time in 1882. From then on, most wardens have served for a two-year term and then stepped aside.

Twolan said he would not be able to hold the top post at the county level without the support of his family, and Huron-Kinloss council and staff.

This is his fourth term as warden, having served in 2007, as well as the past two years.
