White-out conditions cause closure of Highway 21 in Kincardine area

Blowing and drifting snow, and pockets of zero visibility, prompted the OPP to close Highway 21, north and south of Kincardine, Wednesday afternoon.

The South Bruce OPP reported Highway 21 closed, from Amberley to Allenford, at 12:45 p.m., due to the high wind and blowing snow.

For those who decide to travel, police advise you keep your headlights and tail lights on and clear of snow. Remember to keep your speed down - “If you see snow, go slow.”

Meanwhile, around 1:30 p.m., the Huron County OPP reported Highway 21 closed, from Amberley to Goderich, due to strong, persistent wind off Lake Huron creating poor visibility and heavy drifting along sections of the roadway.
 
The Huron County OPP reminds motorists that driving on a closed roadway may result in a $110 fine and three demerit points, if convicted.       

All motorists are encouraged to check weather and road travel conditions by calling 5-1-1 or checking on-line at www.Ontario.ca/trip for up-to-date road conditions for provincially-maintained highways. This bilingual service is available 24 hours a day and provides updates on highway closures and road conditions.

Do not call the OPP provincial communications centre for road and weather conditions. Police will not provide this information. By calling the centre, it ties up phone lines and personnel used for emergency calls.

In addition, the office manager at St. Anthony's School, Kincardine, sent out a notice that no buses were running Wednesday evening. Parents were advised to pick up their children at the school.

Other area schools were also cancelling buses, and businesses were closing early to allow staff to get home safely due to the inclement weather.
