Local youth receives volunteer award for work with Goderich Kidney Walk

Christopher Pennington is not only the honourary chairman of the Goderich Kidney Walk, he and his team also raised more than $8,000 for the cause.

The 12-year-old son of Cathy Pennington of Kincardine and Mark Pennington of Brussels, Christopher was third in pledges at the inaugural Goderich walk, held in September, raising $8,352.50 for the Kidney Foundation. More than 50 people took part, and raised a total of $12,785.

Across Ontario, there were 40 walks, with 1,563 people participating on 270 teams. Christopher's Crew placed fifth in pledges for the province.

In October, Christopher received an Outstanding Volunteer Award, from Harvey Thomson, president of the Waterloo Wellington and District Chapter of the Kidney Foundation of Ontario.

Cathy Pennington noted that the inaugural Goderich Kidney Walk was a huge success. She said that after the event, an elderly Goderich man heard about Christopher and the walk, and donated $500 to him. The man had a kidney transplant 15 years ago, and Christopher inspired him.

Also at the Goderich walk, were Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson and MC Mike Brough. Goderich mayor Kevin Morrison pledged to be at the walk next year and offered his support in promoting the event throughout the area.

Cathy said that Christopher, who suffers from kidney disease, is hoping other people in the region will help raise awareness of the Kidney Walk. If anyone wants to help out by holding a barbecue or yard sale, etc., he welcomes the support next year and wants to thank everyone for their support this year.
