KDSS students graduate from military co-op program in Owen Sound

Two Kincardine District Secondary School students were among the military co-op program graduates honoured Friday afternoon, at the Owen Sound Armoury of the Grey and Simcoe Foresters, a primary reserve infantry regiment of the Canadian Forces.

Alex Convay and Bradley Pickett were inspected by reviewing officer Captain Craig Dewell, and were then presented with their Infantry cap badges of the Royal Canadian Infantry Corps.  

Bradley was recognized at the end of the ceremony as the top candidate in the co-op program. The troops then marched to conclude the graduation ceremony while the audience applauded their hard work, dedication and success in completing the program.  

"The military co-op program is a unique and challenging opportunity," said Master Corporal Elder, during his address to the graduates. "It takes high school students from the surrounding community and immerses them into a military environment. The students began their training early in September. In the past five months, they have completed three courses which covered an array of different skills and knowledge required for success in the Canadian Infantry.  They were taught the significance of teamwork, physical fitness, weapons-handling, and the importance of performing all of the aforementioned skills while under stress.”

To conclude the afternoon, guests were encouraged to tour various stations where they spoke with the graduates and military personnel to learn more about the program. Some of the stations included: an Arctic Tent Demonstration, Kit Display, Camouflage and Concealment Discussion, and Weapons Display.

This opportunity has challenged the students and introduced them to the skills, discipline and commitment required to be successful should they choose to pursue a career in the Canadian Forces, said KDSS co-operative education program teacher Michelle McIver. "The skill set developed in this military co-op will be invaluable for the students as they continue their journey toward a fulfilling and rewarding career."

McIver said that over the years, KDSS has had co-op students at the Owen Sound Armoury, but this is the first time a graduation ceremony was held, inviting teachers, family, and friends, and doing the information displays and session afterwards.

"It was a really amazing afternoon, and I was so proud of these two gentleman. They will return to KDSS next semester for classes."
