South Bruce OPP report scam; and announce constable information session in Kincardine
CON-ARTIST NETS $3,000

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce OPP is reminding area residents to verify unsolicited contacts following the report of a successful scam in the Municipality of Brockton.

The emergency scam or "grandparent scam" involves a panicked phone call from a “grandchild” saying he is in trouble and needs money right away. Typically, the scammers will say the grandchild has been in a car crash and needs your help. They count on you rushing to help your loved one without taking the time to check the validity of the call. In this case, the scam was successful and $3,000 was sent.

The South Bruce OPP is asking you to take the time to verify unsolicited contacts. Unsolicited means that you didn’t ask for it. With this particular scam, ensure that your grandchild is involved before you ever consider sending money.

You work hard for your money, so work hard to protect it and remember, the scams will continue as long as the con-artists continue to make money.

Anyone interested in more information on fraud, can call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or check on-line at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca/.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122.  Should you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit a secure web-tip at www.cstip.ca, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
