Sweet start to Jumpstart fund-raising campaign in Kincardine

The Kincardine Jumpstart fund-raising campaign got off to a sweet start Thursday afternoon, as organizers not only showcased an array of delectable items for sale, but also welcomed a $1,000 donation from Bruce Power.

For the next several weeks, the fund-raising campaign will consist of selling chocolate bars, buttons, and Lazy-J Ranch honey, at the Canadian Tire in Kincardine, and having donation jars around the area, said volunteer Margaret Visser who is working with Brigitte Rouleau of Canadian Tire on this event.

"This ties into Valentine’s Day which is a time to remember love for children and families," said Visser.
 
The Canadian Tire Jumpstart charities program helps cover the cost of sports and activities for children whose families cannot afford to pay. All the money raised stays in this area and 100 per cent of the funds goes toward the children since Canadian Tire pays the administration costs. 

"I decided to help fund-raise for Jumpstart last year when John (Satosek) was telling me that there are many families in Kincardine, Tiverton and Ripley who need financial support," said Visser.

One special donation came from Georgia Thuel (right) of Harvey, Western Australia, who purchased a chocolate bar and a button. Jumpstart has helped more than a million children participate in organized sport and activities since 2005. It helps remove financial barriers to sport so youth, ages four to 18, across Canada have the opportunity to get off the sidelines and into the game.

Applications for assistance can typically be submitted from Jan. 15 to Nov. 1, with the goal to be equitably distributed over spring/summer and fall/winter activities.
