OPP warn of traffic-ticket scam found on E-mail
(HURON COUNTY, ON) - The Huron County OPP warns residents about a recent scam that landed in the inbox of a South Huron resident. In this case, had it not been for anti-virus software installed on the target's computer, she may have fallen victim to the scam.

It all started when the 63-year-old received an E-mail that had the subject title, "TRAFFIC INFRINGEMENT NOTICE 5575482." Inquisitively, she opened up the E-mail and read the following simple statement: "You have been issued with a traffic infringement. Reason: Negligent Driving, Infringement No: 056332875, Amount Due $577.79 CAD. This fine must be paid within the statutory period of up to 2011.11.2016."

Embedded in the E-mail was a hyperlink, and it was clicked on by the target in an attempt to view her "offence notice." Fortunately, her computer had an up-to-date anti-virus program and it identified the attachment as a potential threat. The E-mail address was successfully blocked and the E-mail was disposed of in the junk folder.

Fraudsters will often create "phishing" E-mails in an attempt to lure victims into sending passwords, financial passwords or cash. These scammers will often use the name of legitimate police services and businesses as a way to get this personal information from unsuspecting consumers.

Please note: Government bodies and police services do not issue traffic notices via E-mail, nor do they request E-mail addresses during a traffic stop.

Warning Signs - How to Protect Yourself:

  • Beware of unsolicited E-mails from individuals or organizations prompting you to click on an attachment or link.
  • Watch for spelling and formatting errors.
  • Check the embedded hyperlink in the suspicious E-mail by hovering your mouse over the link to verify the address.
  • Go with your gut. If an E-mail seems fishy, it probably is.

How to Report Fraudulent Emails:

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre toll free number is 1-888-495-8501 or alternatively it can be reported on-line at: Fraud Reporting System (FRS)
